Excerpts from a Love Poem Left Unwritten

I’d like to lie in the curve of your smile

and let my heartbeat measure out each second I get to spend with you

a steady, rhythmic thrum to which the fortress of my soul assembles

you are the only one I’d let my guard down for as I lay here languidly

and in love

I’d like to fall asleep to the staccato of your breathing

so reassuring in its constancy

letting the upturned corners of your eyes cradle me when I’m weak

like how your arms support me even when the weight of the world is on my shoulders

and the weight of my life hangs in the precarious balance inside my mind
